מיכאל רוזנק עוסק בסוגיית החינוך לערכים ומבחין שם בין ערכי-על קיומיים הניצבים מעל כל מערכת תרבותית של מערכת נתונה (כאיסור "עבודה זרה" ביהדות), לבין ערכים מרכזיים שמשותפים לכל חבריה של קהילה. ספר זה מבהיר כיצד ניתן לפתח שיח חינוכי בחברה רב-תרבותית ובדרכי יישובם של מחלוקות. לטענתו, מערכות ערכים מתחלקים לשלוש קומות: הקומה הראשונה כוללת את כל ערכי-העל הקיומיים; הקומה השנייה מכילה ערכים קולקטיביים חשובים השנויים במחלוקת; בקומה שלישית ניתנת לגיטימציה להעדפות אישיות ולערכים אסתטיים.

בספר זה רוזנק מייסד את התאוריה החינוכית בין שני קטבים: 'הדת המפורשת' (explicit) ו'הדתיות המִשתמעת' (implicit). אלה שני קטבים בחיים הדתיים ובחינוך הדתי. הדת ה'מפורשת' משקפת את היסודות הכפויים, השיטתיים והמחייבים בדת, המתוּוכים בידי החברה הבאה בברית, בעוד שה'דתיות המשתמעת' מייצגת את היחיד (או את היחידה), את אישיותו הייחודית ואת גישתו כלפי הנשגב. לטענת רוזנק בני אדם אינם יכולים לחיות באמונה אם הם אינם מטפחים בחינוך את הממד הנורמטיבי-פרוזאי ואת הממד הפואטי-קיומי של החיים הדתיים. שני הממדים צריכים להיות משולבים באישיותו של המורה ושניהם צריכים להיות משולבים גם בחומר הלימוד. יש לסייע לילדים לחיות תחת 'עוֹל' המצוות (הגם שהוא כבד ומסתורי לעתים, אך גם מעודד ומאשר), וגם לחיות בתוך מעגל הדאגה הרוחנית (הגם שהוא שברירי וחסר ודאות).
